Hello, young friends! Today, we’re going to learn about an amazing woman named Helen Keller. Helen faced big challenges in her life, but she never gave up. Her story shows us that we can do incredible things if we try hard and believe in ourselves.

A Silent World

When Helen was just a baby, she got very sick. After that, she couldn’t see or hear. Can you imagine what that would be like?

The Magic Moment

Helen had a special teacher named Anne Sullivan. One day, Anne spelled the word “water” into Helen’s hand while running water over her other hand. Suddenly, Helen understood that things had names! It was like magic, and it changed her life forever.

Learning to Speak

Even though Helen couldn’t hear, she learned to talk by feeling people’s lips and throats as they spoke. She even learned to speak in different languages!

Going to College

Helen worked very hard and became the first person who was both deaf and blind to get a college degree. She graduated with high honors!

Traveling the World

Helen visited 39 countries! She gave speeches and helped start schools for people who were blind. She met many important people, including U.S. presidents and famous inventors.

Writing Books

Helen wrote 14 books and many articles. She wrote about her life and things she thought were important, like women’s rights and helping workers.

Loving Nature

Even though Helen couldn’t see or hear, she loved nature. She enjoyed feeling the warm sun on her face and touching the rough bark of trees.

A Furry Friend

During a trip to Japan, Helen fell in love with a type of dog called an Akita. She was given an Akita puppy and brought it back to America. She was the first person to have an Akita dog in the United States!

Making People Laugh

Helen had a great sense of humor. She often made jokes and loved to make people laugh.

Helen Keller Day

In Pennsylvania, June 27th is Helen Keller Day. It’s a special day to remember her and all the amazing things she did.
